Tale of the Torch. How the sixth club in Russia became the third in the world. What's next? – Club World Championship! Comeback specialists

East Kazakhstan volleyball club"Altai"receivedwildcardin the most prestigious club start in world volleyball.

This was announced at a press conference held today dedicated to this event. The press conference was attended by the head of the department of physical culture and sports of the East Kazakhstan region Askar Mozhanov, the sports director of the Altai VC Doszhan Ualkhanov and the head coach of the Altai women's team Yuri Panchenko.

In 2017, the Asian Club Volleyball Championship among women's teams was held for the first time in the East Kazakhstan region. Having appreciated the high organizational moment, the Asian Volleyball Confederation (AVC) entrusted our region to host the Asian Club Volleyball Championship in 2018. During the Championship, a member of the executive committee of the International Volleyball Federation (FIVB), Stav Jacobi, was present. After the 2017-2018 Asian Club Championship, akim of the East Kazakhstan region Danial Akhmetov submitted a petition to the FIVB to participate in the Club World Volleyball Championship among women's teams. The FIVB management, highly appreciating the holding of the Asian Club Championship in 2017-2018 and seeing the potential in the dynamics of volleyball development in the region, supported the request of the regional akim and provided a wild card to participate in the championship. I would like to note that 10 teams from five continental confederations are participating in this championship. Also, two teams are participating at the invitation of the FIVB, having received a wild card,” said Askar Mozhanov.

The team for participation in the World Championship is already beginning to take shape, but, according to head coach Yuri Panchenko, there are objective factors that do not allow starting preparations now.

Unfortunately, we have an unusual situation,” says Yuri Petrovich. - Most of the Altai players are involved in the national team, and we will wait for the end of at least the preliminary round of the World Championship to have an idea of which players we can count on. We have plans to hold a preparatory training camp in Turkey, in which about 90% of the squad that will compete in China at the World Championships will take part. We will play at the home Kazakhstan Cup and in the first round of the National League, after which we will begin focused preparations for the World Championship. We are planning to strengthen the squad directly for the World Cup, but so far without any specifics. There is still time.

VC "Altai", created on the initiative of Danial Akhmetov in 2015, will become the first club in the history of Kazakh volleyball to take part in the Club World Championship. The Women's Club World Championship has been held since 1991, and in 2010 the tournament became an annual event. Previously, the Championship was hosted by Brazil (1991, 1994), Italy (1992), Qatar (2010-2012), Switzerland (2013-2015), the Philippines (2016) and Japan (2017). Gold medal winners were clubs from Brazil (1991, 1994, 2012), Italy (1992), Azerbaijan (2011), Russia (2014) and Turkey (2010, 2015-2017).

The Club World Championship is ending in Poland. The Italians are playing for gold.

Czestochowa (Poland)

1/2 finals.
"Lube Civitanova" (Italy) - "Rzeszow" (Poland) - 3:1 (29:31, 25:19, 25:14, 25:23).
"Trentino (Italy) - Fakel (Russia) - 3:1 (22:25, 25:14, 25:16, 25:19).
Match for 3rd place."Fakel" - "Rzeszow" - 3:1 (19:25, 25:20, 25:23, 25:23).

Let's start with the main thing: Kazan "Zenit"- is no longer the best club in the world. At least for a year. Vladimir Alekno I've been hunting for the Club World Cup for a very long time and last season I finally achieved my goal. However, the current champions of Russia failed to stay at the top. Moreover, "Zenit-Kazan" didn't even leave the group. The lack of concentration at the end of the game with the Italians did not allow "Lube Civitanova" And… Novy Urengoy "Torch". But first things first.

How did two clubs from Russia end up in the tournament?

This season, the Club World Championship has undergone major transformations. If earlier the winners of the continental club championships took part in the tournament, and only the strongest rated teams received invitations, now the tournament has taken a commercial path. The current format continues to feature the winners of the European, South American and Asian Champions Leagues plus the host club. But the remaining four places are for sale. According to Sport BO, the entrance ticket price is 150 thousand euros. And such a sum scared away, for example, "Perugia"- the champion of Italy, who managed to lure himself from Zenit in the off-season Wilfredo Leona.

But the fourth team from Italy and the sixth team from Poland found funds - "Trentino" And "Rzeszow" respectively. To the complete surprise of management "Fakela", they also received a corresponding proposal. After long internal discussions, a decision was made: agree. This is how “Fakel”, which at the end of the last season of the Super League took sixth place and did not qualify for European competition, and never played in the Champions League, found itself in the company of the strongest clubs in the world. And he didn’t get lost there at all!

Zenit missed five match points in a row

In the first game of the group stage "Torch", the tone in which the leaders of the Russian team set Dmitry Volkov And Egor Klyuka, proved that he was not invited in vain. The Novy Urengoy team beat the reigning champion of the tournament in five sets. "Zenith".

This cannot be called a sensation at all. "Torch" Now it’s really on track: six victories in a row in the Super League, reaching the Final Four of the Russian Cup for the first time in 12 years. Plus Kazan residents without Leona no longer look as indestructible as with him. Moreover, as he later admits Alekno, slightly underestimated the Siberians. All this led to this result.

Only then few would have thought that "Zenith" will also lose the next match. Team Alekno hasn't lost in Europe for seasons, and in order to find out when she made two misfires in a row, you generally need to pick up the Tale of Bygone Years. But, alas, it looks like a new volleyball era will begin with this tournament. Kazan managed to lose to a team that had greatly strengthened in the offseason "Lube Civitanove". “They managed it” - because they did it in the most dramatic way. Just imagine: "Zenith" gave the tiebreaker, in which he led 14:9. The team known for its killer instinct missed five match points in a row!

And she left early. Remaining game with "Hide" no longer had any tournament significance.

It seemed that there simply could not be a more emotional match at the tournament. However, I shocked everyone again "Torch". In a game with the same "Hide" The Russians burned 0:2 and 12:19. It would seem, what chances could there possibly be? But risky serves Volkova And Sticks, selfless play by the blockers - and 30:28 in the game! Fantastic! Then the fourth was out of character, and the tiebreaker ended with a score of 21:19. Definitely, such a victory will go down in golden history. "Fakela".

Bronze!

I really wanted the Novy Urengoy fairy tale to continue. It was necessary to fight both for yourself and for "Zenith", who will now probably take out his frustration on his opponents in the Champions League.

However, in the semi-finals "To the Torch" it wasn't easy. To powerful "Trentino", in which now in addition to half Italian national team led by Simone Gianneli American performers Aaron Russell, Serbs Srečko Lisinac And Uros Kovacevic and, of course, the French libero Zhenya Grebennikov, the Russians no longer had enough strength. Two five-set matches and a short bench had an impact. All this led to a number of players entering the court with a cold. As a result - 1:3.

Camillo Lament after the semi-final he expressed hope that for the match for third place against "Rzeszow" his charges will be able to muster their will. Still, it’s not every day that you get to play for medals at the Club World Championship. And they did!

The first set turned out to be a mess. It didn’t go well, as the day before, at Klyuka - 19:25.

However "Torch" I learned that no one gives up so easily. The blockers started up and started scoring important goals. Volkov And Arthur Udris, started correcting the statistics Klyuka. And the Russians confidently took the second game, and then the third, although they allowed the Poles to win back a couple of set points. The fourth set turned out to be very stubborn, but the Novy Urengoy team put the finishing touches "Rzeszow". Bravo, "Torch"!

And what a pity that such an original team will not play in European competition this season. It is obvious that in terms of their level the wards Camillo Lament would not have gotten lost in the Champions League.

When two Russian teams were placed in the same group at the Club World Championship in Poland, and even together with the powerful Italian “Lube Civitanova”, it became clear that, most likely, only one team from Russia would be in the semi-finals. After the second round, the assumption was confirmed. With one caveat: the tournament debutant Novy Urengoy “Fakel” will continue to fight for the title, and Kazan “Zenit” will resign as champions.

The team's first major tournament Vladimir Alekno without Wilfredo Leona turned out to be a fiasco. There was a collective eclipse and blatant judicial arbitrariness. And “Fakel”, with a whole scattering of young Russian volleyball players, does not recognize authorities and flares up more and more brightly.

Zenit starts, Lyube catches up

Zenit's unexpected defeat from Fakel on the first day of the Club World Championship generously poured fuel into the fire of intrigue in Group A. To avoid a sensational failure and reach the semifinals, the Kazan team had to beat Lube Civitanova. The Italians played earlier than the Russians in the first round and accordingly received more time to recover. But Alekno’s squad had nowhere to retreat. Defeat left only a mathematical chance of leaving the group.

Zenit started the match well. Alexey Samoilenko two blocks per Tsvetana Sokolov brought his team an advantage, and excellent serves Maxim Mikhailova And Erwena Ngapeta made the Russians' superiority impressive - 14:9. The opponent tried to catch up in the score, but Mikhailov and Ngapet accurately capitalized on their chances in attack – 25:20. At the start of the second game, Zenit found an antidote to attacks Osmani Huantoren and took the lead, but “Lyuba” came to the rescue with a serve. Everything was decided in the end, where Zenit was hampered by mistakes Matthew Anderson on serve and in attack, as well as Ngapet’s not the best technique.

“Not Zenit’s day.” How Fakel lifted the Kazan curse

Fakel unexpectedly defeated Zenit at the Club World Championship. Will the semi-finals really take place without Kazan?

Fatal mistakes of Zenit and referees

In the third set, the teams were level again until the last plays. The loss of a setter by the Italians did not affect the game either. Bruno Resende, who injured his finger when he ran into a billboard. Zenit's incipient breakthrough was interrupted by good serves Enrico Chester, but still the set remained with Kazan. Alekno released onto the court at the end of the game Vadim Likhosherstova. The blocker famously attacked with the first tempo and covered Sokolov twice, including on a set point. In the fourth set, the Italians again had a joker in Chester. Having knocked out Zenit three times, he predetermined the outcome of the game. Andrey Surmachevsky The ace won back one set point, but Simon's attack sent the match to a tiebreaker.

In the fifth set, Zenit immediately got down to business. Excellent defense by Verbov and Butko, accurate attacks by Mikhailov and Ngapet, and Samoilenko’s block ensured a super convincing advantage for the Russians - 14:9. What happened after this cannot be explained except by a collective eclipse. Kazan residents then came across an impenetrable block Robertlandy Simone, then they attacked into touch. The colossal advantage was lost in a couple of minutes – 14:14.

Finding himself on the edge of the abyss, Zenit woke up and began to resist, but then the referee came to the aid of Lyuba Civitanova Rogerio Espikalski. The Brazilian, with the score 17:17, first gave a point to Kazan, but after loud dissatisfaction from the Italians, he changed his decision, fixing Butko’s game on the opposing side of the net. The replays make it clear that there was no violation, but the reciprocal indignation of Alekno’s players went unnoticed by the refereeing team.

Of course, it’s easiest to attribute Zenit’s failure to a secret conspiracy against the hegemony of the Russian team, which is boring to the rest of the world, but the Club World Cup has always been distinguished by its own kind of refereeing. Who better than the Kazan people knows that at this tournament you need to decide everything yourself. And the Russian champion coped with this task perfectly... Until the score was 14:9.

"Torch" loses endings

Even after losing the second match in a row, Zenit retained a chance to reach the semifinals. For this, the Kazan team needed the defeat of “Fakel” from the Polish “Skra”. But the team Camillo Lament, having won the most important victory in its history, was not going to stop there. True, the Poles’ plans also did not include an early departure from the home tournament, and therefore the audience at the arena in Plock witnessed the second five-set thriller of the evening, and at the same time another record. In the first round, Fakel and Zenit played the longest match in the history of the Club World Championship - 2 hours 23 minutes. “Zenit” and “Lyube Civitanova” updated their achievement by spending two minutes more on the court, but in the next meeting this record also fell.

In the first set, the hosts took a two-point lead more than once. “Fakel” kept this distance, then equalized the score, but in the end “Skra” kept the game for themselves – 25:23. The Yamal team started the second set powerfully and after the attack Dmitry Volkov received a good advantage - 10:6, but the Poles improved their defense and improved their blocking game, thanks to which they evened out the situation. The most important ending of the second game went like a swing. “Fakel” led 20:18, then lost 22:24, but with the help of Volkov’s block and attack, they won back two set points and found themselves one step away from victory – 25:24. Excitement prevented both teams from playing cleanly, but in the battle of nerves the Poles were stronger - 29:27.

Comeback specialists

“Fakel” was clearly discouraged, which the opponent did not fail to take advantage of. The northerners constantly made mistakes and by the middle of the set they were already losing 12:19. Along with the approaching defeat, the Plachi team's chances of reaching the semi-finals melted away, and Zenit, on the contrary, received a chance for salvation. But then Volkov stood up to serve at “Fakel” and, with an impeccable introduction of the ball into play, inspired his partners to comeback. Soon there was no trace left of Skry’s total dominance. It would be unfair if the feat of will and character turned out to be useless. “Fakel” took the set in a valid ending after a successful attack by Egor Klyuka – 30:28.
In the fourth game, Fakel already had a psychological advantage. After an equal start, the Yamal players rushed forward on serves Dmitry Kolenkovsky And Ivan Yakovlev. The Poles tried to organize a pursuit, but often made mistakes, but the Russian attack had almost no problems. Klyuka put an end to the set – 25:21.

“Lube Civitanova” (Italy) – “Zenit” (Kazan, Russia) - 3:2 (20:25, 25:22, 24:26, 25:23, 19:17)
“Fakel” (Novy Urengoy, Russia) – “Skra” (Poland) - 3:2 (23:25, 27:29, 30:28, 25:21, 21:19).

And again, in the third match in a week, the Novy Urengoy team had to play a tiebreaker. In meetings with Kuzbass in the Super League and with Zenit at the Club World Championship, the fifth games turned out well for Plachi’s squad. In the middle of the tiebreaker with Skra, fears arose that the trick would not work a third time. Ace Vlažly brought the Polish advantage to four points – 8:4, but even here the young Russian team did not flinch. Another tense ending. The hosts were the first to reach match points, but Fakel quickly seized the initiative and completed the super match in their favor the fifth time. Volleyball players tormented each other for 2 hours and 40 minutes. That is, in two days the Fakel players spent more than five hours on the site. And they pulled out two crazy battles. One can only envy the character of the daring team!

"Torch" is almighty. Novy Urengoy is still unbeaten in the Super League

In the meeting between the two most promising teams of the Russian championship, Kuzbass was close to victory, but Fakel pulled out a tough match.

Further without Zenit

After the final rally, Fakel players and coaches poured onto the court full of joy, and Zenit Kazan realized that the tournament was over for them. Vladimir Alekno's team participated in the Club World Championship for the seventh time and for the first time were left out of the semi-finals. Whether this is directly related to Leon’s departure remains to be seen, but one way or another, the competition in Poland for Zenit resulted in the collapse of hopes of defending the title.

Now all the attention of Russian fans will be directed to Fakel. On Wednesday our team has a day off, which is very useful after two long matches, and on Thursday the main sensation of the tournament will compete for first place in the group with the Italian “Lube Civitanova”. Before the start of the championship, the Fakel coach noted that the team itself did not fully understand its capabilities. Now it seems that they are limitless.

“Not Zenit’s day.” How Fakel lifted the Kazan curse

Fakel unexpectedly defeated Zenit at the Club World Championship. Will the semi-finals really take place without Kazan?

Kazan “Zenit” entered the 2018/19 season as the current owner of five trophies at once. To the already familiar victories in the championship, Cup, Russian Super Cup and Champions League, the long-awaited success at the Club World Championship was added. For the first title defense in Poland, the team Vladimir Alekno went as one of the main favorites, but the Club World Cup loves surprises.

The 14th edition of the tournament promises to be special for Russian volleyball. For the first time, two teams from Russia are competing for the title of the best club on the planet - Zenit as the winner of the Champions League and Novy Urengoy Fakel as the holder of a special invitation from the organizers. And it had to happen that both of our clubs not only found themselves in the same group, but were also forced to play each other in the first round.

“Zenit” and “Fakel” were not on fire like children, and the result of the match provided maximum intrigue in the fight for reaching the semi-finals.

They did it! Zenit won the World Cup

In a great final, the Kazan team beat the Italian club Lube Civitanova.

The fearless beginning of "Torch"

The Club World Championship is a specific tournament. Both the short-lived format and the unusual playing style of opponents from other continents have an impact. But “Fakel” was not going to fade away in the company of the best clubs in the world, despite the squad’s sarcastic mood Camillo Lament there wasn't. Before the start of the competition, the Italian mentor admitted that his team itself does not fully understand its capabilities, but at the same time emphasized that “Fakel” is not afraid of anyone.

The cry was not disingenuous - the team from Novy Urengoy started the first match in its history at the World Club Championship very confidently, there was no noticeable fear in the actions of the Yamal players. Good serves Egor Klyuka and powerful attacks Arthur Udris helped Fakel gain a four-point lead by the middle of the first set, but Zenit quickly caught up with the opponent thanks to a series of serves Maxim Mikhailova. The teams reached a tense ending, where the glider, which was inconvenient for opponents, tipped the scales in favor of the “Torch” Dmitry Kolenkovsky. And Udris converted the set point with another strong shot.

"Torch" is almighty. Novy Urengoy is still unbeaten in the Super League

In the meeting between the two most promising teams of the Russian championship, Kuzbass was close to victory, but Fakel pulled out a tough match.

"Torch" is not timid

Plachi's team did not slow down and after the middle of the second set they earned a good advantage - 18:15, but the Kazan team, understanding the significance of this set, did not let their opponent go, and in a stubborn ending they snatched victory after a beautiful shot Erwena Ngapeta. The third game also took place without a clear advantage for one of the teams, however, closer to its end, the Fakel players began to make more mistakes, which the Kazan team gladly took advantage of.

“Skra” (Poland) – “Lube Civitanova” (Italy) – 1:3 (21:25, 25:22, 21:25, 25:27)
“Zenit” (Kazan, Russia) – “Fakel” (Novy Urengoy, Russia) - 2:3 (23:25, 28:26, 25:21, 22:25, 11:15)
Group B. 1st round
“Trentino” (Italy) – “Hatam Erdekan” (Iran) – 3:0 (25:19, 25:15, 25:19)
“Resovia” (Poland) – “Sada Cruzeiro” (Brazil) - 3:2 (23:25, 25:18, 25:23, 24:26, 17:15).

It seemed that in the fourth set the reigning winner of the Club World Championship would put the squeeze on the upset newcomer, but the northerners did not even think of giving up. Cool serves Andrey Ananyev coupled with the confident play of their partners in attack and blocking helped Fakel organize a breakaway. Towards the finish line, Zenit almost made a comeback, but Klyuki’s aces, the first pace Ivan Yakovlev and attack Dmitry Volkov extended the fans' enjoyment of the game.

In the tiebreaker, the volleyball players from Novy Urengoy, charged with positivity, played powerfully and accurately, but the Kazan players began having problems with their serves. Artyom Volvich made a mistake when putting the ball into play, Maxim Mikhailova The Yamal team defended with a block, and on match point Yakovlev scored an ace.

Lucky number of Novy Urengoy

“Fakel” not only defeated the strongest team on the planet in its first match at the Club World Championship, but also broke an unpleasant streak of 12 defeats against Kazan. It was the 13th meeting with Zenit that became happy for the Plachi players. After the match, the Italian admitted that he did not expect such a great game from his guys, and also clarified that he still considers the Kazan team the main favorites of the tournament. In turn Vladimir Alekno said that it was not Zenit’s day, complained about the weak play on serve and block, and called the only positive thing that “the youth on the other side are already showing results.”

The disappointment of the Zenit coach is understandable, but nothing terrible happened for his team. The chances of reaching the semi-finals are by no means lost, although there is no longer any room for error. All the more difficult it will be for the Italian “Luba Civitanova” and the Polish “Skre”, who will fall under the hot hand of a team from Kazan that is not used to losing in the next rounds. It is important for “Torch” not to spill emotions and maintain concentration for the next matches. I remember that after the victory over Dynamo Moscow in the semi-finals of the Russian Cup, Plachy literally forbade his players to rejoice. Surely the most experienced coach will do something similar after the victory over Zenit, but this time it will be more difficult not to succumb to euphoria.

The Brazilians are on Zenit's schedule

In another match in Plock, rivals of Russian teams in Group A fought. The Italian “Lube Civitanova” showed why this team is called Zenit’s main competitor in the fight for the title. Leal, Juantorena, Sokolov, Simon and Bruno Resende crushed the Polish “Skra” with a powerful game. No matter how hard the world champions tried Mariusz Włazły And Arthur Shalpuk, the Polish club failed to reach even the fifth set.

In general, this World Club Championship is distinguished by a large representation of European teams. Of the eight participants, only the Brazilian “Sada Cruzeiro” and the Iranian “Khatam Erdekan” perform not on their native continent. Perhaps acclimatization also affected the failures of these teams in the first round. The Iranians were unable to oppose anything to the Italian Trentino, and the three-time competition champions from the Cruzeiro Garden, to the delight of the public in Rzeszow, lost to the local Resovia. The teams gave the fans a whirlwind thriller, the denouement of which was the minimal advantage of the Poles in the tiebreaker - 17:15.

Zenit and Sada Cruzeiro started the tournament with defeats, but they still have a chance to improve the situation. All the most important and interesting things are ahead.
