Bellator 172

Mixed martial arts fans were looking forward to the fight night Bellator 172, in the main fight of which the legendary Fedor Emelianenko was supposed to fight with former UFC roster member Matt Mitrione.

Emelianenko is considered by many to be one of the greatest representatives of mixed martial arts in the history of this sport. The 40-year-old Russian was the champion of Pride FC at a time when the organization was considered the best on the planet. He chalked up victories over such fighters as Mirko Filipovic, Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira, Mark Hunt, Andrei Orlovsky, Pedro Rizzo, Mark Coleman, Kevin Randleman, Tim Sylvia, Naoya Ogawa and others.

Emelianenko announced his retirement in 2012, but returned to the cage at the end of 2015 and stopped Jaideep Singh in the first round as part of the RIZIN FF show. In 2016, the Last Emperor fought only once. In a confrontation with the Brazilian fighter Fabio Maldonado, he earned an extremely controversial victory on points.

Emelianenko was scheduled to fight in the United States for the first time since 2011. His opponent was Matt Mitrione, a 38-year-old former NFL player who, after joining Bellator from the UFC in 2016, has recorded two consecutive knockout victories over Karl Seumanutafa and Oli Thompson. In addition, Mitrione has defeated fighters such as Kimbo Slice, Derrick Lewis and Gabriel Gonzaga.

Cheick Kongo, Oli Thompson, Josh Thomson, Patrick Freire performed at the Bellator 172 tournament. However, the central fight between Emelianenko and Mitrione immediately before the show was removed from the card by the organizers after the American fighter was hospitalized due to kidney problems.

The new main event was the fight between Patricky Freire and Josh Thompson. Freire defeated his opponent by knockout (see the table below for more detailed results).
