Orienteering. Eric Rost: "Before the race, I tried not to think about medals"

Orienteering is a sport in which participants, using a sports map and a compass, must pass control points (CPs) located on the ground. Results, as a rule, are determined by the time of passing the distance.

Orienteering competitions are held in different groups, which can be formed both according to the age principle and according to the skill level of the participants. The complexity of the distance and its length are determined by the age group and the complexity of the terrain of the competition. At the same time, the distance (route) should be unfamiliar to all participants, combine the difficulties that an athlete can overcome, having the ability to navigate and good physical fitness.

Types of orienteering

Running orientation- competitions in orienteering running are held in a large number of different disciplines, for example: a given direction ("ZN"), by choice ("VO") and even on a marked track ("MT"). World Championships in orienteering running have been held since 1966.

ski orienteering

Competitions in ski orienteering are held in conditions of stable snow cover in the disciplines: given direction, marked track, Orientathlon (Ski-O-thlon) - a combination of the two previous types. Competitions in a given direction are held using a special map on which ski tracks are plotted, as well as the types of ski tracks in relation to the speed of movement on skis. World Ski Orienteering Championships have been held since 1975.

Bicycle orientation

Competitions in cycling orienteering are held in disciplines: a given direction, a marked route, by choice or in a combination of these types. The sports map shows the types of roads in relation to cycling speed. The World Bicycle Orienteering Championships have been held since 2002.

Precise orienteering, trail orienteering

The international name is Trail Orienteering (trail-O, also Pre-O, the old name is "trail orientation") - a sport that consists in accurately interpreting the situation on the ground using a map. During the control time, participants overcome (usually in a given sequence) a distance consisting of points, on each of which several prisms (flags) are located within sight. Participants must determine and fix which of these prisms (flags) on the ground corresponds to the legend indicated on the map and given (possibly none). At the same time, the map can intentionally missing some landmarks available on the ground.

The movement of participants is allowed only along the permitted paths (paths) or marked areas of the terrain. The athlete can choose to start either on foot (running), or on a bicycle, or on a single wheelchair driven by hands or an electric motor. The time of passing the distance is not taken into account, the result is determined by the number of correct answers. At some checkpoints called "Time-KP", the time for making a decision is additionally recorded, but even in this case, the time of movement between checkpoints are not taken into account.

World Trail Orienteering Championships (WTOC) have been held since 2004. Since 2013, the Sprint discipline has been included in the program of the World Championship. The sprint consists of one "Time-KP".

From March 5 to March 13, 2017 in Krasnoyarsk at the base sports complex Biathlon Academy hosted the 22nd World Ski Orienteering Championship. More than 120 athletes from 21 countries competed for medals in relay races and individual races.

Krasnoyarsk residents have witnessed a stubborn struggle among the strongest athletes in the world. For the competition, modern telecommunication systems were used, allowing spectators to continuously monitor the progress of the race and view the results.

Women's and men's relay races

World relay champions Kirill Veselov and Andrey Lamov spoke about their victorious performance

“Today, from the start, I accelerated for a long time, I felt physical fatigue after yesterday's start, there was annoying drowsiness. But when I got on the track, all this weakness passed, and I joined the race.

And although the guys brought me a good start, the race was not easy. I worked at my own pace, did not give myself any slack, because Eric Rost is a very strong athlete, it was impossible to give him a chance, ”said Andrey Lamov.

“It was very important to recover after yesterday's long distance in order to show good readiness today. The championship as a whole was great. We have been training for a whole year, preparing for the championship and for this race, in particular, so each of us understood that today we have no right to let the team down. It's a bit unfortunate that the men's team has only one golden success, but we all tried and gave our best throughout the tournament," he said. Kirill Veselov.

The Russian men's borstal team confirmed the status of the world champion in the relay

On March 12, the relay trio of Andrey Grigoriev, Kirill Veselov and Andrey Lamov won the last race of the XXII World Ski Orienteering Championship with a convincing advantage. Athletes gradually increased their advantage, which made it possible to please the audience with another finish with the Russian flag. Note that the Russians managed to repeat the success of the 2015 World Cup.

The relay silver goes to Sweden, which was represented by Martin Hammarberg, Ulrik Nordberg and Erik Rost. The stable performances of the team of this country allowed Sweden to win the unofficial medal standings of the World Championship, it has 6 gold and 3 silver medals.

Representatives of Finland managed to climb the third step of the podium. Tero Linnainmaa and Iurie Uusilato kept pace with the Swedish orienteers throughout the distance, but Ville Petteri Saareala was unable to keep up the pace of the race, driven up by Erik Rost.

It should be noted that two Krasnoyarsk citizens Kirill Veselov and Andrey Grigoriev, who are employees of the Siberian Federal University, performed in the Russian team.

I am glad that yesterday I managed to win gold in the long distance, and it is especially pleasant to finish the home world championship with a victory in the relay, - said Maria Kechkina. "It's always more fun to win when the favorites of the competition are in the race, so for us the absence of the Swedish national team, one of the strongest teams in the world, was not the most pleasant surprise for us."

“In general, I had a pretty successful championship. In all races, I managed to climb the podium and collect a complete set: gold, three silvers and bronze. Of course, I hoped for a better result, but Tove Alexandersson was better prepared for this championship, ”said Polina Frolova.

The Russian women's team won the championship relay

Lars Mohold: "I wanted to keep the world title, but it didn't work out"

Long-distance bronze medalist Norwegian Lars Mohold spoke about his medal and the final fight with Andrey Lamov.

“I wanted to keep the world title, but it didn’t work out. Eric Rost lost his father during the last championship, Kirill Veselov went to this medal for a very long time. I think these guys deserve medals more than me.

Today I went all out. I'm not very happy with how I did the middle distance. Then my stick broke, because of this I lost a lot of time. And this time there were two guys who were stronger.

Andrey Lamov and I walked track to track, and we walked at a very high speed. In the last hundred meters, I decided that I would do everything I could. Just before the finish, some kind of strength woke up in me, and I was able to snatch this second from Andrey.

Kirill Veselov: “On the last lap, I just thought:“ Endure, endure! Don't give away the medal!'"

SibFU employee Kirill Veselov, who won silver in the long distance race, commented on his performance.

“Bad luck haunted the first days of the competition. In the sprint, one second was not enough to reach the podium, at the middle distance it seemed to be in the prizes, but the offensive point at the stadium, where the checkpoint mark did not work, destroyed all hopes. Today, when the last lap was running, it was already dark in my eyes, I could hardly have time to look at the map, my legs were cramping from fatigue. The last lap was very difficult, and therefore I am very happy with my medal. On the track, resentment for the previous days drove, when somewhere there was not enough, somewhere there was no luck. At the last meters of the distance, I only thought: “Tolerate! Tolerate! Don't give away the medal." The servicemen prepared the skis perfectly, I am very satisfied. This is probably the only championship when there are no complaints against them, they worked for 5 points.

Eric Rost: "Before the race, I tried not to think about medals"

Swede Erik Rost, winner of the XXII World Ski Orienteering Championship, shared his emotions from his second gold medal

“I have been fighting for a long distance victory for several years and today I managed to do it. From the beginning of the championship, I set a very high bar for myself, rushed forward to victory, so I am very happy with my gold. However, before the race, I tried not to think about the medals, because when you start to wind yourself up with thoughts about winning, you lose concentration. I only thought about what I can do."

Lars Mohold: "There is still a long distance ahead, for which I have high hopes"

Norwegian orienteer Lars Mohold, who won a bronze medal in the middle distance race, appreciated his performance.

“In principle, I had a good race, but I made mistakes that pushed me back. Steep slopes, slippery distance, high speed. Because of this, he could not think quickly and, to be honest, because of this, he was dissatisfied with himself. There is still a long distance ahead, which I have high hopes for.”

Eric Rost: "My plans for the next races are to win as many medals as possible"

Middle distance silver medalist Eric Rost (Sweden) commented on his performance.

“Satisfied with my result. Of course, the first race for me was more successful than the second. My plans for the next races are to win as many medals as possible.

There are definitely technical difficulties on the track, because when the weather changes, you need to wax the skis again, you need to inspect the equipment again. Today is very slippery, ice on the track, and sometimes I was even scared. Compared to other championships I have attended, the World Championship in Krasnoyarsk is organized at the highest level.”

Stanimir Belomazhev: "It was my dream, and I did it!"

The world champion in the middle distance race Stanimir Belomazhev (Bulgaria) shared his emotions from the victory.

“The conditions were the same for everyone. Today the most important thing was the concentration, because the speed was very high and I think it was important to know every moment of the track, every option that you had to do. After the finish, he broke his sticks. It's all emotions.

In general, I wanted to win even during the sprint, to show such a good result, but I saw that the competition was very strong. And I just hoped that I could win this championship. I think that I will still win a medal here, we will see which one.”

Sergey Gorlanov: “Today I fell at a distance twice, but I did it on purpose”

Russian Sergey Gorlanov, who was disqualified after the middle distance race, spoke about his mistake.

“Today is worse than in the sprint. I got a B because I made one mistake. At first I went well, if I'm not mistaken, passing the distance, I heard that I was going first. It so happened that the first observation checkpoint was not marked. I started to get a little nervous. I tried to catch up with the ending, but it didn’t work out.

Today I fell at a distance twice, but I did it on purpose, because you pick up a lot of speed and it is simply impossible to turn at dangerous intersections. I figured it would be faster to fall and get up neatly than to go around the wasteland. Yes, and the weather is like that, everything is frozen, ice all around. It was faster and more profitable for me.”

Andrey Lamov: “Of course, I want a medal, but I compete to the best of my ability”

Andrey Lamov, who finished fifth in the middle distance race, commented on his performance.

“Today it was hard to run. There were big hills of snow on the track, a lot of ice, which made it hard to turn and hard to brake. Especially at high speed it was technically impossible to turn. I tried to hold on to the very end. Today was a very difficult distance. The choice of options was at every second, and there were more than 20 points.

Of course, I want a medal. But I perform to the best of my ability."

The Russian team was left without medals in the middle distance

On March 10, on the fourth competitive day of the World Ski Orienteering Championship, the Russian team was left without medals in the men's middle distance race.

Stanimir Belomazhev from Bulgaria took the first place with a score of 33:48, Erik Rost from Sweden (34:03) was on the second step of the podium, Lars Moholdt from Norway was third with a score of 34:54.

The best time among the athletes of our team was shown by Andrey Grigoriev and Andrey Lamov, who took fourth and fifth places, respectively. Russian Kirill Veselov, who had a good chance to enter the top three, was disqualified for not having a mark at the last stage, as was his teammate Sergey Gorlanov.

Race results:

  • 1st place - Stanimir Belomazhev;
  • 2nd place - Eric Rost (+0:15);
  • 3rd place - Lars Moholdt (+1:06);

  • 5th place - Andrey Lamov (+1:49);
  • disqualified - Sergey Gorlanov and Kirill Veselov.

On March 10, on the territory of the Biathlon Academy, men will compete for the fifth set of championship medals. The start of the race is at 14:30. In total, 53 athletes will start at the start.

Kirill Veselov (46th starting number), Andrey Lamov (48th), Sergey Gorlanov (50th), Andrey Grigoriev (52nd) will perform for the Russian national team today.

Middle distance, women

Tove Alexandersson: “The presence of Polina Frolova behind me tangibly motivated me”

Middle distance triumphant Tove Alexandersson commented on her third win at the World Ski Orienteering Championships.

“It was a really good race. Despite the difficult distance, I coped with the task, especially since I really like difficult orienteering, like today.

Polina, like all Russian girls, is a very strong racer, so her presence at my back during the race motivated me significantly.

I am in very good shape, moreover, the competitions themselves are well organized, so there are no unsportsmanlike disturbances.”

Salla Koskela: "This is the World Cup and no one expects easy tasks here"

Finnish orienteer Salla Koskela, who won the third bronze medal in the middle distance race on March 9, commented on her good performance at the 22nd World Ski Orienteering Championships.

“I feel amazing. I did not expect that I would achieve such success here. If I can continue to maintain this level, I will be doubly happy. On the track, I was pretty calm, because I understood: if I do everything in my power in the race, I will have every chance to be on top.

Today, like yesterday, the route was very difficult, but this is normal for the World Cup, here no one expects simple tasks. This tournament, it seems to me, is more difficult than all previous world championships, and Krasnoyarsk, as a host city, has its own style in organizing and holding competitions.

Vice-champion of the middle distance race Polina Frolova commented on her performance

“I didn’t make any serious mistakes today, but there were small flaws, so there is dissatisfaction with my own work.

The presence of Tove Alexandersson on the track spurred us on, but we did not see each other along the distance, since the starting gap was more than a minute. Thanks to the coaches, I knew that I was leaving for the second round with a 40-second delay, I tried to win back.

In terms of complexity, this world championship is reminiscent of Sweden, there was also a dense grid of ski tracks and difficult weather conditions, but it was Krasnoyarsk that surpassed all my world championships in terms of organization.”

Tove Alexandersson once again showed the best result of the championship

March 9 ended the third women's individual race in the framework of the XXII World Ski Orienteering Championships. At the middle distance, Tove Alexandersson proved the steadfastness of her results and became the owner of the third gold of this world championship. Polina Frolova from Krasnoyarsk took second place in the third race in a row. Bronze medal in a tense struggle went to Salle Koskele.

Note that the world leaders confirmed their status: the podium of yesterday's sprint was repeated. Other representatives of the Russian team remained a step away from triumph, but there is still a reason for the fans to rejoice: the Russians perform consistently well, in today's race Alena Trapeznikova, Marie Kechkina and Tatyana Oborina got on the extended middle distance podium.

In total, 32 athletes went to the start, but not all of them finished: the Italian Stefania Corradini could not complete the distance.

Race results:

  • 1st place- Tove Alexandersson;
  • 2nd place- Polina Frolova (+1:37);
  • 3rd place- Salla Koskela (+2:07);
  • 4th place - Alena Trapeznikova (+2:17);
  • 5th place - Tatyana Oborina (+3:00);
  • 6th place - Maria Kechkina (+3:24).

Krasnoyarsk Polina Frolova as part of the Russian national team will perform in the middle distance

Today, March 9, at 15:00, the second set of medals of individual competitions for women in the middle distance discipline will be played. Russia will be represented by:

  • a pupil of the Krasnoyarsk orienteering school and a two-time silver medalist of the real world championship - Polina Frolova (start number 28);
  • wards of Eduard Khrennikov Tatyana Oborina (24th) and Maria Kechkina (32nd);
  • as well as Alena Trapeznikova from Khabarovsk (30).
In total, 32 athletes will fight for the victory.

Features of the middle distance are that the athlete must have both a good physical training, and the ability to read the map as quickly as possible. The predicted finish time of the leader varies from 40 to 45 minutes.

As a reminder, tickets for the competitions can be purchased at the ticket offices of the city, at the Japanese Center of the Siberian Federal University (Svobodny Ave., 79 on the website of the championship.

Congress hall of the Siberian Federal University.

Sprint triumphant Swede Ulrik Nordberg commented on his performance in the race

“I was surprised to see my name among the leaders. It was a very difficult race, I had to make a lot of difficult decisions. I understood that I was not going very fast, but I also realized that I had no right to make a mistake. I have very good impressions of the sprint, it's great to feel like a champion of such major competitions. The organization of the World Championship in Krasnoyarsk is impressive. Today the weather has made its own adjustments to the race, but even at high temperatures the organizers prepared the track with dignity.”

Andrey Lamov: "The inclusion of orienteering in the Universiade-2019 program will draw attention to our sport"

Russian orienteer Andrei Lamov, who took second place in the men's sprint, commented on his performance in the race and the prospects for the development of ski orienteering in Russia. Recall that at the finish the athlete from the Vologda region lost to the Swede Ulrik Nordberg only 1.6 seconds.

“To be honest, I was upset. On the one hand, I completed the task for the race, but, on the other hand, I was a little short of the best time. The track today is very interesting, I had to quickly navigate. In one place on the track, I almost fell - the track was already badly broken, the athletes dug a hole by sharp braking. In that place, he lost control and missed important seconds.

The inclusion of orienteering in the Universiade 2019 program will certainly draw attention to our sport. In Krasnoyarsk we see the highest level of organization. There is an excellent ski and biathlon complex, competitions are covered by television. Moreover, the Krasnoyarsk Territory is one of the leading regions of the country in orienteering, which attracts young people to this sport, and for young athletes, the main thing is to love what you do. If you like it, you will invest both your soul and time, then everything will definitely work out.

Andrey Lamov became the silver medalist in the sprint race, Sergey Gorlanov - the third

Two Russians achieved success on the slopes of the Biathlon Academy as part of the XXII World Ski Orienteering Championships. Andrey Lamov and Sergey Gorlanov won silver and bronze in the men's sprint respectively.

The Swedish athlete Ulrik Nordberg became the world champion, who was the last to enter the track. He beat the Russian orienteer Andrey Lamov by only 1.6 seconds on the last meters of the track.

Let us add that Kirill Veselov, an employee of the Siberian Federal University, became only the fourth in this race. A broken stick prevented Vladimir Barchukov from Krasnoyarsk from fighting for medals - he finished 15th.

In total, 55 athletes participated in the race.

  • 1st place- Ulrik Nordberg;
  • 2nd place- Andrey Lamov (+00:02);
  • 3rd place- Sergey Gorlanov (+00:13);
  • 4th place - Kirill Veselov (+00:15);
  • 12th place - Andrey Grigoriev (+00:51);
  • 15th place - Vladimir Barchukov (+01:07).

Tove Alexandersson: “If you don’t know how to make the right decision, then no matter how fast you run, you still won’t win”

Swedish orienteer Tove Alexandersson commented on her victory in the sprint at the World Ski Orienteering Championships.

“Today was a very difficult race due to the difficult track configuration and difficult weather conditions. There were many paths and paths on the track, we had to make a choice as quickly as possible - this was the biggest difficulty. I know that I could show more good time, but lost seconds on some segments.

Today was a rather hard surface, the snow is wet, but quite hard. But in general, everything is in order with the track.

To win, you need to be successful in the complex: both run fast and navigate well. But if you don’t know how to make the right decision, then no matter how fast you run, you still won’t win.”

Note that this is the second consecutive victory of the Swedish athlete in this tournament.

Polina Frolova: "The sprint distance in orienteering is very fast, and the price of a mistake is high"

Polina Frolova, vice-champion of the sprint at the World Ski Orienteering Championship in Krasnoyarsk, commented on the silver medal, which became her second day at this championship.

“The sprint distance in orienteering is very fast and the price of a mistake is high, as it is very difficult to make up the gap in such a race. The most difficult moment in the race today was when I went from one descent along the cutoff and did not have time to read the map. A cut is a very dangerous thing, and you don’t always have time to quickly read all the forks and paths from the descent.

The weather was pretty warm today. And this, on the one hand, is good, but, on the other hand, the snow is very viscous and wet. Everything is melting, and this is not the best way for sliding.

Polina Frolova won the silver medal in the sprint

The sprint race of the XXII World Ski Orienteering Championships has come to an end. SibFU employee Polina Frolova took 2nd place, losing only 7.9 seconds to the world mixed relay champion and yesterday's victor Tova Alexandersson (Sweden). The sprint bronze went to Salla Koskele (Finland), who pulled out the victory at the very end of the race.

The rest of the representatives of the Russian team could only compete for places in the top ten. Race results:

  • 1st place- Tove Alexandersson;

In this championship, everyone was on an equal footing. We have not trained on this track for almost two years, so that there would be no reason to reproach us for something, and Krasnoyarsk residents have no advantages over other athletes. We are for a fair fight."

“We are very lucky that on the eve of the Universiade the World Championships are being held as a test event. Krasnoyarsk already had the experience of holding this tournament in 2000, then few people were ready for this kind of competition. But many years have passed, and now Krasnoyarsk strikes with a brilliant level of readiness, we are provided with the highest level of organization. Yes, the weather is good today. Our athletes and the sport in general, of course, are helped by such a level of home competitions.

Orienteering is a youthful, smart sport, the competition of the future. I would like us, as organizers, to create more opportunities for young people, to show this sport on all platforms. None of our athletes trained on this track for two years, we took a break. We even had to disqualify an athlete who trained here. The Orienteering Federation strictly followed this, we have a high level of world standards. I think today and the coming week will show that.”
